Police arrest hit-and-run suspect at her home

Miller County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Texarkana, Ark., woman Friday in the hit-and-run accident that left a 66-year-old Miller County woman dead.
Deputies arrested Melinda Perry, 31, outside her residence at Shady Acres Mobile Home Park shortly before noon. Perry faces a charge of misdemeanor negligent homicide in the death of Nancy Conyers, 66.
Based on a statement reportedly made to investigators, Perry may have visited a drug lab prior to the fatal accident. Conyers was struck and killed in front of her home on Union Road as she went to her mailbox.
Deputies went to the suspect's mobile home on Blackman Ferry Road as they were looking for the vehicle involved in the hit and run, said Miller County Sheriff H.L. Phillips.
Deputies found the victim lying near the middle of County Road 44, also known as Union Road, when they responded to the incident shortly before 9:30 a.m.
Law officers found that the woman had apparently been hit by an eastbound vehicle, which struck both her and the mail box as she was apparently retrieving mail from it, said Capt. Toby Giles, Miller County chief deputy.
"The vehicle apparently carried the victim some distance before she rolled off the hood and onto the road," Giles said.
After striking the victim, the suspect vehicle, described as a Saturn, apparently continued eastbound and struck some small trees growing in a ditch near the roadside near Conyers' home. It is believed that striking the trees knocked one of the vehicle's side mirrors off, Giles said.
Deputies began searching local trailer parks for the vehicle until they found the Saturn, which had a missing side mirror and which bore damage consistent with running into small trees, at Shady Aces Mobile Home Park, Giles said.
"Some reflectors and other broken parts of the vehicle we found at the scene match the damage to the vehicle," he said.
Deputies were inspecting the vehicle's damage while it was parked outside Perry's mobile home. She turned herself in to authorities shortly after a relative brought her to her residence.

Deputies were inspecting the vehicle's damage while it was parked outside Perry's mobile home. She turned herself in to authorities shortly after a relative brought her to her residence.
After her arrest, Perry allegedly made a statement about the hit and run incident to investigators, which led them to charge her with misdemeanor negligent homicide, Giles said.
The charge could be upgraded to a felony if Perry is found to have had either illegal drugs or alcohol in her system at the time of the incident, Phillips said. However, Giles said results of Perry's drug and alcohol test won't be available for several more days. She is currently being housed in the Miller County Jail pending bail.
According to investigators, Perry made a statement to investigators about leaving a mobile home drug lab earlier that morning on the Texas side of South State Line Avenue, Giles said. Deputies from Bowie and Miller counties arrested the man to whom the lab belongs about 2 p.m. Friday as he was northbound on South State Line Avenue.
Miller County deputies charged William Bobo, age unavailable, with possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to manufacture methamphetamine when they stopped his vehicle on the roadway, Giles said. Deputies found matches, test tubes, syringes and other drug paraphernalia inside Bobo's Buick Century.
Phillips said other arrests may be pending in connection with the lab, which was searched later that day by Bowie County Sheriff's deputies.
